What Is MCP: Open Standard for AI Agents to Call Tools and Data
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an AI Agent discover and call external tools and data in a uniform way. When a server exposes its capabilities as tools, clients such as Claude or ChatGPT can call those tools and use the returned results.

The Problem MCP Solves
Before MCP, AI apps had to build custom integrations for every external service. MCP standardizes this connection method into a single protocol. A service only needs to run an MCP server once, and multiple AI clients that support MCP can use that same server.
Components: Clients, Servers, and Tools
- Client: The AI app where the agent runs, such as Claude, ChatGPT, or developer tools.
- Server: The provider of tools and data. Anything can be a server, including search data, storage, messaging, or payment services.
- Tool: An individual function exposed by the server. It has a defined name, description, and input format, allowing the agent to determine when and how to call it.
Remote MCP vs. Local MCP
| Classification | Connection Method | Keys and Passwords |
|---|---|---|
| Remote MCP | Register the server address (URL) in the client | Connect via login authentication or provider keys |
| Local MCP | Run the server program on your local machine | Keep keys only in your local machine settings |
In either case, keys should strictly remain only with the provider and on your computer.
Criteria for Choosing an MCP Server
Many MCP servers are publicly available, but their quality and maintenance vary widely. Check the following:
- Whether the provider is official or verified in the original catalog
- Whether it is actively maintained and has a license
- Whether a remote URL is available for immediate connection
- Whether real users actually use it
The ListeningMind MCP Server Catalog selects and updates listings every Friday based on these signals and search demand. Review the Registration and Selection Criteria for details.
ListeningMind MCPs
- Data API MCPs: The agent directly calls tools such as search volume, search paths, keyword clusters, and AI overviews. Pricing is set per tool and paid in Lima. See the API Hub.
- App-specific MCPs: Apps in the App Catalog provide the same functions available in their interfaces via MCP as well.
- listeningmind.com Remote MCP: Log in with a listeningmind.com plan to connect.
Once you have tools to call through MCP, you can define the order and criteria for using them in Skills.
Questions
- How does MCP differ from an API?
- An API is a general method for systems to call other systems. MCP is a standard that provides tool names, descriptions, and input formats so an AI Agent can easily discover and call them. The same data is often offered through both an API and MCP.
- How does MCP differ from a skill?
- MCP defines what an agent can do. A skill defines the order and criteria for performing those tasks. Using both together produces more reliable results.
- Are MCP servers free to use?
- Connecting to an MCP server is often free, but charges for the services called by the server may apply separately according to the original provider.
