# What is AX (AI Transformation)?

AX (AI Transformation) is the process of identifying parts of a company's work that AI Agents can handle, and providing them with the data to read, tools to call, procedures to follow, and budgets they can use. Humans handle judgment and approvals.

## How AX Differs from DX

DX (digital transformation) was about moving work done by humans into digital systems. Humans were still the ones doing the work, and systems were tools that humans used.

In AX, AI Agents directly handle part of the work. An agent finds information, calls tools, organizes results, and passes them to a human. That is why AX does not stop at buying AI tools. For work to proceed to completion, the agent must have data it can read, tools it can call, procedures it can follow, and a budget it is permitted to use.

## The Four Elements of AX

| Element | Meaning | What Happens Without It |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Facts the agent reads as the basis for judgment | Plausible but baseless answers are generated |
| Tools | Functions the agent calls. Opened via [MCP](https://daas.listeningmind.ai/en/wiki/mcp) and [API](https://daas.listeningmind.ai/en/wiki/api) | The agent guesses while clicking the screen like a human |
| Procedures | The sequence and criteria for doing the work. Documented as [Skills](https://daas.listeningmind.ai/en/wiki/skill) | Results vary every time the same task is performed |
| Permissions and Budget | The money and scope the agent can use, and where humans approve | Costs go out of control, or nothing can be delegated |

## Where to Start

1. Collect questions that come up repeatedly on your team. For example: "What demand is rising this season?" or "Where are customers leaving for competing brands?"
2. Check whether the data to answer those questions exists inside the company or needs to be purchased externally.
3. Expose the data through tools so the agent can call them.
4. Write down the sequence and criteria humans use as procedures.
5. Set the monthly budget the agent can use and the points where humans will approve.

The most common sticking point in this sequence is step 2. When there are many questions but no supporting data, the agent merely repeats generic statements.

## Starting AX in Marketing

Marketing is a good area to start AX. Questions are repetitive, and there is external data in the form of actions customers leave behind through search. More details are covered in [Enterprise Marketing AX](https://daas.listeningmind.ai/en/wiki/marketing-ax) and [Intent Intelligence](https://daas.listeningmind.ai/en/wiki/intent-intelligence).

## What You Can Try Right Away with ListeningMind

- On-screen [marketing apps](https://daas.listeningmind.ai/en/catalog/apps): Analyze markets, brands, and AI search responses using search data.
- [Data APIs](https://daas.listeningmind.ai/en/) and MCPs called by agents: The agent requests a key, a human sets and approves a monthly budget, and calls are made within that limit.
- Widely used external [Skill, MCP, and API catalog](https://daas.listeningmind.ai/en/catalog): Curated every Friday.

## FAQ

**Is AX only for large companies?**

No. You can start with a single recurring question and a single dataset that answers it. For smaller teams, the impact of handing repetitive tasks previously done by one person over to an agent is felt even more significantly.

**How is this different from adopting AI tools?**

Adopting tools simply increases the software humans use. AX changes data, tools, procedures, and budgets together so that agents can take over part of the work.

**What should be measured first?**

It is best to start by looking at the proportion of tasks delegated to agents that ran to completion without human review, and the number of times humans had to revise the results.
